Lore & Background
The story emphasizes the importance of teamwork from day one. Even before they owned their iconic van or wore specific uniforms, the core values of deduction, bravery, and loyalty were present. This origin tale is frequently cited by fans for its character-driven approach, showing that the mystery-solving instinct was innate to the group rather than something learned solely through experience.
Reader's Guide
In Coolsville, Ohio, the talking Great Dane Scooby-Doo is left behind on the way back to the pound, sees two ghosts rise from their graves, and ends up being adopted by Shaggy. A fight on the school bus lands Shaggy in detention with Fred, the quarterback of the football team, Velma, a science nerd, and Daphne, a wealthy drama club student. Ghosts and a masked figure called the Specter then disrupt a pep rally, and Vice Principal Grimes suspends and later expels the four. They learn that the school stands on the grounds of Coolsville Academy, a prep school destroyed by a flood on the day it meant to bury a time capsule. The Specter is revealed to be Principal Deedle, who used a spell book to summon the ghosts so that the school would be evacuated and he could reach a valuable stamp misprint hidden in the capsule.
