Destiny (video game series)

Destiny is an online-only multiplayer first-person shooter series from Bungie, originally published by Activision and later self-published by the studio after their 2019 split, a setup that lasted until 2026. The franchise kicked off in 2014, marking Bungie’s first new console property since the Halo games. It takes place in a “mythic science fiction” universe, blending a shared-world multiplayer experience with role-playing elements. Players can engage in both player-versus-environment (PvE) and player-versus-player (PvP) activities. PvE includes story missions, three-player strikes and dungeons, six-player raids, and free-roam patrol zones with public events. PvP offers objective-based modes and traditional deathmatch options.

You play as a Guardian, a protector of Earth’s last safe city, wielding a power called Light granted by a celestial being known as the Traveler. Your job is to defend the City from various alien races, traveling to different planets to investigate and eliminate threats before humanity is wiped out. Along the way, you also fight an intergalactic war against the Traveler’s ancient enemy, the Darkness—and eventually learn to harness its power as well.

The first game, simply titled *Destiny*, launched on September 9, 2014, for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One. Over three years, it received four expansion packs. Its sequel, *Destiny 2*, arrived in September 2017 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, with a Windows version following in October. It later came to Google Stadia, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. *Destiny 2* had ten expansions; the eighth, *The Final Shape*, concluded the first story arc (the “Light and Darkness” saga), while the ninth, *The Edge of Fate*, was meant to start a new “Fate” saga—but those plans were scrapped when Bungie announced it would end support after the final update in June 2026. The tenth expansion, *Renegades*, became the game’s last. Starting in its second year, *Destiny 2* introduced seasonal content—extra downloadable content released between major expansions. Year 7 replaced seasons with three larger episodes, and Year 8 shifted to two long seasons, each beginning with a medium-sized expansion and receiving a major update midway through.
