Arcana Heart 3 is set in a fantastical version of Japan two months after the 'Great Kanto Incident' depicted in Arcana Heart 2. Although reconstruction has begun, the disaster has weakened the international organizations that monitor elemental phenomena and protect the country. When dimensional distortions begin appearing across Japan, the Drexler Institute—an organization that creates artificial Arcana—emerges from hiding. Drexler intends to use its influence over Japan's elemental authorities to sink the country within six days. The playable 'Maidens', young women able to communicate with Arcana, investigate the distortions and attempt to prevent the plan.

Arcana Heart 3 is a two-dimensional fighting game. After choosing a fighter, the player selects an Arcana, a spirit associated with a tarot archetype. Each Arcana changes the fighter's attributes and grants a distinct set of special moves, allowing different combinations of characters and abilities. Combat uses three attack buttons, an Arcana button, and a homing button. The homing mechanic lets fighters rapidly pursue opponents and cancel attacks into aerial movement. Arcana and Force gauges govern defensive techniques, powerful attacks, and Extend Force, a temporary enhanced state. A simplified control option assigns major functions to individual buttons. The console versions add a fully voiced story mode, training and score-attack modes, and online multiplayer.

The narrative of Arcana Heart 3 unfolds in a fantastical rendition of Japan, set roughly two months after the catastrophic Great Kanto Incident that closed out the previous entry. Although rebuilding efforts have taken hold, the disaster has left the international bodies responsible for monitoring elemental phenomena and safeguarding the nation dangerously weakened. Into this vacuum of authority, dimensional distortions begin tearing open across the country. The Drexler Institute, an organization specializing in the fabrication of artificial Arcana, seizes the opportunity to surface from hiding. Its leader, Drexler, leverages influence over Japan's elemental regulatory bodies to push a scheme that would literally sink the nation within a six-day window. The playable cast, known as the Maidens, are young women with the rare ability to communicate directly with Arcana spirits. They investigate each distortion as it appears and race to dismantle Drexler's plan before the deadline expires. The story culminates in a confrontation with Ragnarok, a giant artificial Arcana built by the Institute, who serves as the game's final boss.

A Long Tail of Revisions

What began as a single arcade title in December 2009 grew into one of the most persistently updated fighting games of its era. Examu's original cabinet launch was followed by console ports in early 2011 from Arc System Works for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in Japan, with Aksys bringing the PS3 version to North America via PlayStation Network in April 2011 and PQube handling European distribution in August. The first major revision, Love Max!!!!!, hit Japanese arcades in May 2013 with rebalanced matchups and the survival and training modes that had previously been console exclusives. Its multi-platform ports rolled out through 2014 and into 2015. Love Max Six Stars!!!!!! arrived in arcades in December 2014, adding the character Minori Amanohara, and reached Windows players in December 2017 after a successful Kickstarter. The Xtend update in April 2021 introduced two more fighters, Pistrix and Dark Heart, also funded through that campaign. Critical Response & Roster Growth

Critical reception was generally favorable. Famitsu awarded both Japanese console releases a combined score of 27 out of 40, while GameSpot's Heidi Kemps gave the title 7 out of 10. She singled out the homing system, the sheer variety of fighter-and-Arcana pairings, and the online multiplayer as standout features, though she felt the single-player experience and certain presentation choices held the game back. By March 2011, over 50,000 console copies had shipped. The Love Max!!!!! revision earned a slightly higher Famitsu score of 28 out of 40 on both PlayStation 3 and Vita, and Marcus Estrada of Hardcore Gamer rated the Vita version 4 out of 5, praising the depth of the combat systems and the volume of content. The roster itself grew steadily: the original 23 fighters, comprising 20 returning characters plus newcomers Weiß, Eko, and Scharlachrot, expanded to 24 with Minori in Six Stars, and ultimately reached 26 with the addition of Pistrix and Dark Heart in Xtend. The 2023 arcade edition offers all 26 playable characters alongside 25 selectable Arcana.
