Crimson Desert, an action-adventure game from Pearl Abyss, launched on March 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S. What began as a prequel to *Black Desert Online* was reworked during development into a separate, single-player universe, and it sold to generally favorable reviews.

The story follows Kliff, a member of the Greymanes, as he tries to reunite his scattered comrades after a devastating attack by the rival Black Bears. Set on the fictional continent of Pywel, the plot centers on rebuilding the Greymanes and confronting the Black Bears’ leader, Myurdin. The open world, built with Pearl Abyss’s proprietary BlackSpace Engine, offers seamless exploration, horseback combat, and activities like fishing, cooking, and crafting. Combat combines combos, magic, and elemental effects, with large-scale boss fights against creatures like dragons.

Development began in early 2018, with the game first teased as Project CD in early 2019 and officially announced at G-Star 2019. The team drew inspiration from Sicily’s architecture and landscapes to shape Pywel. A custom XML scripting system was created to speed up data parsing for non-programmers, and the project took seven years total. A free, 20-minute demo streamed on Twitch on September 1, 2026, using Amazon GameLift Streams cloud gaming.

Critics gave the game generally favorable reviews. Destructoid called it addictive despite rough edges, while Press Start found it imperfect but impressive. PC Gamer praised its scale but noted uneven quality, and Eurogamer described it as laser-targeted at the attention economy. Shacknews thought it was too ambitious. Combat was widely highlighted as the standout feature, with Checkpoint Gaming noting player expression in movesets and GameSpot praising the skill tree’s focus on new attacks over stat upgrades.
