Production

The character Curtis was created by Wes Archer and Tom Kauffman for the Rick and Morty episode "Get Schwifty," originally serving as an unnamed stand-in for President Barack Obama. The surname Curtis was introduced in the show's fifth season, and the first name Andre followed in the seventh. Dan Harmon noted that later portrayals of Curtis were shaped by Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign and the concept of "a cartoonishly bad president," with the character starting as a blend of Obama and Trump before evolving into a unique figure. The spin-off series was announced by Adult Swim after Keith David’s surprise appearance at the network’s Rick and Morty panel during San Diego Comic-Con on July 25, 2025. Harmon and Siciliano explained that the spin-off would explore science-fiction stories from Curtis’s viewpoint. Executive producers include Harmon, Siciliano, Danielle Uhlarik, Monica Mitchell, and Steve Levy. Animation is handled by Lighthouse Studios for Green Portal Productions. Adult Swim renewed the series for a second season in July 2026.
