Voice cast and characters

Ian Cardoni provides the voice for Rick Sanchez C-137, the alcoholic grandfather of Morty and one of the show's two main characters, who is on a quest to find Rick Prime, an alternate-universe version of himself responsible for murdering Rick's first wife and daughter. Harry Belden voices Morty Smith Prime, the other lead character and Rick's grandson, typically portrayed as anxious, insecure, and skeptical of Rick's wild escapades. Chris Parnell plays Jerry Smith, the father of Morty and Summer, husband to Beth, and Rick's son-in-law, as well as Tom, a news anchor who, alongside co-host Shonda, frequently criticizes the President. Spencer Grammer voices Summer Smith, Morty's older sister and Rick's granddaughter. Sarah Chalke portrays both Beth Smith and Space Beth Sanchez, the mothers of Morty and Summer, wives of Jerry, and daughters of Rick. Tom Kenny voices multiple characters: Gene Gilligan, the Smiths' neighbor; Squanchy, a close friend of Rick's; Gul'Karna, a Yautja private investigator from the Predator series hired by Wayne to tail his ex-wife Amy, only to date her instead; and Mr. Stabby, a talk show host with blades for limbs who often inadvertently kills his audience. Kari Wahlgren voices Diane Sanchez, Rick's late wife; the A.I. that runs Rick's Space Cruiser and Garage; and Jessica W., Morty's occasional love interest who is also a "time god." Keith David voices President Andre Curtis, the U.S. President and a rival of Rick's. Susan Sarandon voices Dr. Helen Wong, the therapist for Rick and the Smith family.

Production

The seventh season falls under a long-term agreement between Adult Swim and series creators Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon, which promised 70 new episodes across multiple seasons. By the end of season six, 30 of those episodes had aired, leaving 40 still to come. Before season seven, Roiland was let go from the show after facing felony domestic abuse charges that were later dismissed for lack of evidence. To replace him, Adult Swim brought in two unknown voice actors, Ian Cardoni and Harry Belden, announced on the season premiere as soundalikes for the main characters. Cardoni got the part first because of his Rick impression; writer Scott Marder noted that casting was tough since “everyone sounded like Macho Man Randy Savage or like a cousin of his. No one sounded exactly like Rick.” Belden was hired much later, only “after exhausting every possible resource.” Jon Allen now voices Mr. Poopybutthole, also known as Wayne P.B., a role Roiland used to play. Marder explained that Allen’s casting freed up other replacements to concentrate on the primary cast. Starting with the episode “Rise of the Numbericons: The Movie,” rapper Ice-T voices Magma-Q, another character previously performed by Roiland.

Reception

Season 7 of Rick and Morty holds a 77% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes from 12 reviews, with an average score of 6.30 out of 10. The critics’ consensus there notes that while the show’s famously unpredictable nature has settled into a holding pattern, the recasting of the two main characters is handled with fairly seamless results and still produces plenty of amusing invention. On Metacritic, the season earned a 73 out of 100 from 6 critics, indicating generally favorable reviews. Rolling Stone’s Alan Sepinwall, reviewing the first two episodes, observed that the new voice actors sounded virtually identical to the original performances. Jake Kleinman of Inverse agreed that the voice swap had no impact on the show, but found the writing and overall direction disappointing. Alison Foreman of IndieWire expressed disappointment that the creative team chose to maintain the status quo rather than steer the series in a new direction after Justin Roiland’s departure. As of 2025, season 7 is the worst-received season of the series.
