Bahram Beyzai

Iranian master of theatre and cinema, pioneer of the New Wave.

Last updated

Bahram Beyzai was a playwright, filmmaker, researcher, and scholar whose work bridged ancient Persian myths and contemporary social themes.[1] He is frequently described as the foremost dramatist in the Persian language, earning the sobriquet “the Shakespeare of Persia”.[1] On 26 December 2025, which was his 87th birthday, Bahram Beyzai passed away in Palo Alto, California.[2]

Life and work

His paternal uncle was the celebrated poet Adib Beyzai, and his paternal grandfather and great-grandfather were also notable poets.[3] Before starting his filmmaking career in 1970, Beyzai had already established himself as a dominant force in theater as both a playwright and historian.[1] He is widely regarded as a trailblazer of the directors later associated with the Iranian New Wave.[1] Bahram Beyzai came into the world on 26 December 1938 in Tehran; his father, Ne'matallah Beyzai, was a Baháʼí poet, and his mother, Nayereh Movafegh, was a housewife.[4]

Around the time he turned 17, Beyzai began cutting classes to attend movies, which intensified his desire to understand cinema and visual arts.[5] While a student at Dar'ol-Fonoun high school, Beyzai authored two historical plays, and this genre became his favored approach to writing.[6] Beyzai wed Monir-A'zam Raminfar in 1965, ended that marriage in 1994, and had already married Mojdeh Shamsaie in 1992.[7]

What the cited sources add

The Stanford Iranian Studies Program confirmed Beyzai died on his 87th birthday, a date observed in Iran as Playwrights’ Day.[1] According to the Stanford statement, Beyzai completed the text of “Dash Akol According to Marjan” five years before his death, described as a demanding culmination of his late creative period.[1] The statement also expressed gratitude to Mojdeh Shamsaie, Beyzai’s wife and longtime collaborator, for supporting him in his later years.[1] Beyzai had a profound love for Iran and never ceased to promote and preserve Iran’s cultural heritage despite narrow-mindedness directed against him and his family.[1]

He was also a leading intellectual voice on Iranian culture and identity.[1]
