Lore & Background
Jack was born into the Van der Linde gang, who went to great lengths to protect him. In Red Dead Redemption 2 the Braithwaite family kidnaps him and hands him to Angelo Bronte, who treats him well and returns him when the gang confronts him; afterwards John grows more affectionate towards his son. After the gang breaks up the family moves around the country, and in 1907 they settle with John at Beecher's Hope, bringing a dog named Rufus. In 1911, during Red Dead Redemption, Abigail and Jack are abducted so that John will hunt down his former comrades, and they are returned when he finishes. After John is killed, Abigail and Jack bury him. In 1914 Jack buries Abigail next to John, tracks down the now-retired Edgar Ross and kills him in a duel.
Reader's Guide
In Red Dead Redemption the player controls John for the main story and his son Jack in the epilogue. Jack's adoption of his father's outlaw life at the end of the game has been read as commentary on the theme of redemption, and on the cycle of violence that his father could not escape. Mashable's Jess Joho described him as a representation of innocence contrasting the cruelty of his surroundings.
