FC Sachsen Leipzig was established on 1 August 1990 following the merger of FC Grün-Weiß Leipzig and SV Chemie Böhlen, itself a successor to BSG Chemie Böhlen. The club took up play in the third-tier Oberliga Nordost and participated in qualification for the 2. Bundesliga at the end of the 1990–91 season but failed to advance. Sachsen won the Oberliga title in 1992–93 but was denied promotion due to financial difficulties. The club later played in the Regionalliga Nordost until 2001, when it again collapsed into bankruptcy.

In 2006, Red Bull GmbH attempted to purchase FC Sachsen Leipzig with the aim of advancing to the Bundesliga. Despite the club's constant financial troubles, fans across the country strongly opposed the commercial approach, and protests deteriorated into violence. Red Bull abandoned the plan and instead purchased the playing rights of SSV Markranstädt, leading to the establishment of RB Leipzig in 2009. Sachsen declared bankruptcy for a second time in March 2009 and folded on 30 June 2011.

After dissolution, two successor sides emerged: BSG Chemie Leipzig, founded by supporters in 1997, and SG Leipzig Leutzsch, founded on 21 May 2011. SG Leipzig Leutzsch adopted the name SG Sachsen Leipzig in 2013 but filed for insolvency in May 2014 and dissolved. The name Sachsen Leipzig was revived in October 2014 by LFV Sachsen Leipzig, which began play in the 3. Kreisklasse Leipzig and won successive promotions.
