The rowing department originated as Ruder-Club Germania in 1866, later joining Rudergesellschaft Wiking Leipzig in 1919. Thiele later won silver in 2012 and gold in 2016. Philipp Wende won gold in men's double sculls in 2016, with Tim Grohmann as substitute. The club formerly had a rugby union section that won five East German championships from 1954 to 1963.
