History

SpVgg 1899 Leipzig hit its peak in the 1910s and 1920s, competing in the regional Verbandes Mitteldeutscher Ballspiel-Vereine. The club claimed league titles in 1912, 1914, 1922, and 1924, and won the Mittledeutscher Pokal in 1931. Those wins earned them spots in the national playoffs, where they reached the semi-finals in 1912 and 1924. In 1933, the Nazis restructured German football into 16 top-tier regional leagues, and SpVgg played just one season in the Gauliga Sachsen, in 1937–38. During World War II, in January 1944, they teamed up with TuRa Leipzig to form the wartime side Kriegspielgemeinschaft Leipzig. The 1944–45 season was cut short by the war, and the club was lost by its end. After the conflict, denazification led to the disbanding of many organizations, including sports clubs. Former SpVgg members then founded SG Lindenau-Hafen. In early 1949, this club merged with SG Leutzsch (from TuRa’s former membership), SG Lindenau-Aue, SG Leipzig-Mitte, and SG Böhlitz-Ehrenberg to create Zentrale Sportgemeinschaft Industrie Leipzig. The team played in lower-tier East German competition under various names: ZSG Industrie Hafen-Leipzig (1949), SG Hafen Leipzig-Lindenau (1950), BSG Stahl Hafen Leipzig (1951), and later BSG Fortschritt West Leipzig, but never climbed to higher levels. Following German reunification in 1990, Fortschritt merged with BSG Motor Lindenau and took back its original identity as SpVgg Leipzig. The club still plays in the lower-tier Stadtklasse Leipzig, which is the ninth division.
