John Greig: Appearance Record and Captaincy

John Greig (born 1942) spent his whole career at Rangers as a player, manager and director and holds the club's appearance record: 755 official games between 1961 and 1978, including a record 121 in the League Cup. He captained the side that won the 1972 European Cup Winners' Cup against Dynamo Moscow in Barcelona, won three domestic trebles, and in 1999 was voted The Greatest Ever Ranger by the supporters.

Reader's Guide
An Edinburgh boy who supported Hearts, Greig was signed by Bob McAuley and began as a forward, scoring most of his 120 goals in those early years, before moving to midfield alongside Jim Baxter and finally to left back. His captaincy coincided with Celtic's long run of success from the late 1960s to the mid-1970s, which only added to his standing. He won 44 Scotland caps, 15 as captain, scored the winner against Italy at Hampden in 1965 and led the side that beat world champions England 3-2 at Wembley in 1967.
He was given a testimonial against a Scotland XI in 1978 and the same May became manager in place of Jock Wallace. Rangers never won the league under him, finishing second in 1978-79, but reached the European Cup quarter-final that season, beating Juventus and PSV, and won two Scottish Cups and two League Cups; he also signed Ally McCoist from Sunderland. He resigned in October 1983.
