Reader's Guide

The 1996-97 side had been strengthened by Jorg Albertz, Joachim Bjorklund and Sebastian Rozental, bought for almost 10 million pounds, with Brian Laudrup and Paul Gascoigne the regular match-winners; injuries in the second half of the season brought Mark Hateley back briefly from Queens Park Rangers and Andy Dibble in as cover for Andy Goram. Rangers also won the League Cup 4-3 against Hearts, lost 2-0 to Celtic in the Scottish Cup quarter-final and reached the Champions League group stage with Grasshopper, Auxerre and Ajax.

The following summer about 14 million pounds was spent, mostly on Italian players, in pursuit of a tenth title, but injuries to Lorenzo Amoruso and Marco Negri and Celtic's signings of Henrik Larsson and Paul Lambert ended the run in 1997-98.
