Propp was drafted 14th overall by the Philadelphia Flyers in the 1979 NHL Amateur Draft. He immediately started playing in the league that year, recording 34 goals and 75 total points in his rookie season. He played 11 seasons with the Flyers, reaching the Stanley Cup Final three times (1980, 1985, 1987) while averaging over a point per game in 790 games. In the middle of the 1989–90 season, he was traded to the Boston Bruins and recorded 12 points in the last 14 games as the team made a run to the Stanley Cup Final.

He became a free agent and signed with the Minnesota North Stars, reaching the Stanley Cup Final again in 1991 after recording 23 points in 23 playoff games. He played two further seasons but declined, moving to HC Lugano of the National League A in the middle of the 1992–93 season. He played one last NHL season with the Hartford Whalers in 1993–94, recording 29 points in 65 games and becoming the 41st player to record 1,000 career points. He closed out his career with HC Anglet of FFHG Division 1 in 1995.

Propp scored 425 goals and 579 assists for 1,004 points in his NHL career, appearing in five NHL All-Star Games. He reached the Stanley Cup Final five times and lost each time. Internationally, he won the 1987 Canada Cup and the 1992 Spengler Cup. In 160 Stanley Cup playoff games, he recorded 148 points, which is 34th best all-time in NHL history. Until 2025, his playoff points for a left winger were the most in NHL history.

• Propp moved past Bobby Hull on the all-time playoff scoring list among left wingers on April 12, 1991.
