The polar regions, also known as the frigid or polar zones, encompass Earth’s polar ice caps, surrounding the North and South Poles within the polar circles. In the north, the region is dominated by floating sea ice covering much of the Arctic Ocean, while the south features the Antarctic ice sheet on the continent of Antarctica and the surrounding Southern Ocean. These high-latitude areas are distinct from the tropics and the two middle latitude belts that lie between them and the equator.
The Arctic can be defined in several ways: as the area north of the Arctic Circle, north of 60° north latitude, or from the North Pole south to the timberline. The Antarctic is typically defined as south of 60° south latitude or as the continent of Antarctica itself, a definition used in the 1959 Antarctic Treaty. The climate in both regions is shaped by Earth’s axial tilt of 23.5°, which causes solar radiation to arrive at an oblique angle, spreading over a larger area and traveling a longer distance through the atmosphere, where it is absorbed, scattered, or reflected. This weak sunlight is further diminished by extensive ice and snow cover, which reflects much of the incoming energy. As a result, the polar regions are frigid year-round, with short, cold summers and extreme variations in daylight—twenty-four hours of daylight in summer and complete darkness at midwinter.
The northern polar region hosts many settlements and diverse human cultures, with countries such as the United States, Canada, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Sweden, Iceland, and Russia claiming Arctic territories. Circumpolar populations often share more similarities with each other than with people within their own national borders. In contrast, the southern polar region has no permanent human habitation, though it supports a complex ecosystem, particularly along the Antarctic coast. Coastal upwelling provides nutrients for krill, which in turn sustain creatures from penguins to blue whales.
