Exploration is the act of seeking out the unknown, driven by an expectation of discovery. While organized exploration is mostly a human endeavor, the urge to explore is widespread among animals that can move purposefully and learn. For example, social insects like ants and bees show exploratory behavior when foraging, as information from returning individuals influences the actions of the rest of the colony.
**Geographical**
Geographical exploration is often considered the primary meaning of the term. It involves discovering remote or hard-to-reach parts of Earth’s surface. **Underwater**

The most effective approach for understanding the ocean and other underwater regions is systematic, targeted exploration that includes simultaneous surveying, data recording, processing, interpretation, and publication. This knowledge supports effective management, conservation, regulation, and the discovery and use of resources. Less than 10% of the ocean has been mapped in detail, even less has been visually observed, and the full diversity and distribution of marine life remain largely unknown.
**Space**
Space exploration uses astronomy and space technology to investigate outer space. While astronomers primarily explore space with telescopes, physical exploration is carried out by both uncrewed robotic probes and human spaceflight. Like classical astronomy, space exploration is a major source of space science. Observing objects in space predates recorded history, but it was the development of large, efficient rockets in the mid-20th century that made physical extraterrestrial exploration possible. Common reasons for exploring space include advancing scientific research, national prestige, uniting nations, ensuring humanity’s long-term survival, and gaining military or strategic advantages over other countries.
**Urban**
Urban exploration involves investigating manmade structures, especially abandoned ruins or hidden parts of the built environment. Photography and historical documentation are central to the hobby, which sometimes requires trespassing on private property. The activity carries risks, including physical danger and, if done without permission or illegally, the possibility of arrest and punishment. Some urban exploration activities violate local laws, broadly interpreted anti-terrorism laws, or can be considered trespassing or invasion of privacy.
**Geological**
Traditionally, mineral exploration relied on directly observing mineralization in rock outcrops or sediments. Today, it also uses geologic, geophysical, and geochemical tools to search for anomalies, which narrow the search area. The area being prospected should be covered thoroughly enough to avoid missing important finds, but past experience can guide decisions: certain geological evidence indicates a very low probability of finding desired minerals, while other evidence points to a high probability. When high-probability areas are identified, it is efficient to focus on them and skip low-probability zones. Once an anomaly is identified and interpreted as a prospect, more detailed exploration—such as soil sampling, drilling, and seismic surveys—assesses the best mining method and economic potential.
