Rory McIlroy
Northern Irish golfer, six-time major champion, and first European to complete the modern career grand slam.
Rory Daniel McIlroy was born on 4 May 1989 in Holywood, County Down, Northern Ireland, to parents Gerry and Rosaleen (née McDonald). His mother worked night shifts at a 3M factory while his father held multiple jobs—cleaning, bartending—often working 100-hour weeks to fund their son’s golfing ambitions. An only child, McIlroy attended St Patrick’s primary school and later Sullivan Upper School. He first picked up a plastic club at age two, and by three was hitting 40-yard drives at Holywood Golf Club. At seven, he became the club’s youngest member. He practiced chipping into the family washing machine and studied Nick Faldo’s technique on video, sometimes sleeping with a club to ingrain the interlocking grip. As a child, he was an avid fan of Tiger Woods, watching every hole of Woods’s 1997 Masters win.
McIlroy’s amateur career took off early. He won the U10 World Championship at Doral in 1998, the same year he told the BBC his goal was to win all four majors. He became a scratch golfer at 12 and received mentorship from Darren Clarke. He won the Ulster Boys’ U15 and U18 titles, played for Ireland at the 2004 European Boys’ Team Championship, and helped Europe win the 2004 Junior Ryder Cup. In 2005, he became the youngest winner of both the West of Ireland Championship and the Irish Close Championship. That year, he made his European Tour debut at the Daily Telegraph Dunlop Masters and shot a 61 at Royal Portrush, breaking the course record. He left school in 2005 to focus on golf, forgoing a scholarship at East Tennessee State University.
McIlroy turned professional later in 2007 after reaching number one in the World Amateur Golf Ranking. His first major came at the 2011 U.S. Open, and he rose to world number one in 2012. By age 25, he had added three more majors: the 2012 and 2014 PGA Championships and the 2014 Open Championship. He became the first European to complete the modern career grand slam, joining Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, and Tiger Woods. After a ten-year major drought, he won the 2025 Masters to finish the slam, then repeated at the 2026 Masters. He also won The Players Championship in 2019 and 2025, and in 2022 became the first golfer to win the FedEx Cup three times. He has spent over 100 weeks as world number one.
McIlroy has represented Europe, Ireland, and Great Britain & Ireland at various levels. He has played in every Ryder Cup from 2010 to 2025, with Europe winning in 2010, 2012, 2014, 2018, 2023, and 2025. He has been named PGA Tour Player of the Year three times and won the European Tour’s Harry Vardon Trophy seven times. After his professional success, McIlroy bought his parents a house in 2009, saying he could never repay their sacrifices but would ensure they never worked again.
