Early life

Mason Fung was born in 2004. As a young child, he learned Choy Li Fut from his grandfather. During primary school, he received diagnoses of Asperger syndrome and ADHD, which led to speech difficulties and bullying from peers. When he was 13, his mother signed him up for acting classes to help him speak more clearly, though she did not plan for him to become an actor. He later studied at Baptist Lui Ming Choi Secondary School. After one year of training, he tried out for the film Zero to Hero. Following a Hong Kong Film Award win in November 2021, he left school in Form 5 to act full-time.

Career

Mason Fung first appeared on screen as a child actor in Form 3, taking on the role of a younger version of Edward Ma's character in the 2019 sports film We Are Legends. Around the same time, he began working on commercials and music videos, including the video for Hins Cheung's "Prodigy 1985." When he was 15, Fung shared a lead role with Leung Chung-hang, playing the younger version of Paralympic champion So Wa-wai in the biographical film Zero to Hero. Critics took notice: Allan Hunter of Screen Daily highlighted how Fung brought out So Wa-wai's warm charm, modesty, and determination, while Hui Yuk-man of HK01 found his portrayal of innocence so natural it seemed unlearned. For that performance, Fung won Best Supporting Actor and was also nominated for Best New Performer at the 40th Hong Kong Film Awards.

In July 2022, shortly after his award win, Fung said he would join TVB's Artiste Training Class to improve his speaking and presentation skills. He left after the first day in September, explaining that the teaching style did not match what he was looking for and that he did not see it as useful for his career. He later had a supporting part in the 2022 crime film A Murder Erased, and then played a younger version of Hubert Wu in the TVB series Hello Missfortune. In 2024, he took a starring role as the autistic brother of Venus Wong in the TVB crime drama Forensic Heroes VI: Redemption. Fung is also scheduled to appear in Donnie Yen's upcoming action film The Prosecutor.
