Early life
Growing up in Reykjavik, Iceland, Glowie often felt cut off from the wider world. As a kid, she was into painting, drawing, dancing, and singing. Her musical tastes ranged from R&B acts like Destiny's Child, Alicia Keys, Outkast, and Craig David to teen pop stars such as Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift, with Alicia Keys as her biggest influence. Bullying at school shaped the themes of her songs "Body" and "Cruel."
Career
Glowie first gained attention in 2014 by winning the Singing Contest of Icelandic Junior Colleges. Though 11 record labels approached her with offers, she asked them to hold off for a year or two so she could focus on growing as an artist. Her debut single, "No More," came out on 10 April 2015 via StopWaitGo and became a hit, staying at number one in Iceland for three weeks. Later that year, on 29 September, she released "Party," which spent 10 weeks on the Icelandic singles chart and reached number four. In 2016, she put out "One Day" on 13 February, which also peaked at number four and stayed on the chart for six weeks. On 4 June 2016, she dropped "No Lie," which spent eight weeks on the chart, including two weeks at number one; a music video for it appeared on 22 June 2016. In February 2017, Vice named her one of Iceland's hottest artists. The following month, it was announced she had signed an international deal with Columbia Records and RCA Records. On 27 October 2017, she was featured on iLL BLU's track "Tribalist (Get to Know)." Her first Columbia single, "Body," arrived on 26 October 2018, written by Julia Michaels, Justin Tranter, Mattias Larsson, and Robin Fredriksson. The music video, shot in Malibu and released on 16 November 2018, featured dancers of various body types, which Glowie said was meant to encourage self-confidence and positivity. On 22 March 2019, she released "Cruel," written by Tayla Parx and produced by Oscar Görres; it was originally scheduled for 15 March but was delayed. Glowie explained she wanted the song to help anyone facing hardship feel it was okay not to be okay sometimes. Clash called it "a blistering pop statement, a ruthlessly executed mini-manifesto of divine digital sonics." A music video for "Cruel" came out on 28 March 2019.
