Investigation
During the investigation, police learned that Adrianna had been diagnosed with ADHD. Lewis said she initially struggled to bond with her daughter but that her affection grew over time. Investigators found few toys in the house; Lewis claimed toys had been taken away for a week as punishment and were stored in a shed, but a search of the shed revealed no toys. A little red wagon and two inflatable pool toys were in the yard. Lewis passed a lie detector test in which she denied killing her daughter. Sheriff Lee incorrectly told reporters that Adrianna had been found in the aboveground pool; in fact, her mother had pulled her out and performed CPR before police arrived. Lewis was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in September 2007. She declined a plea bargain that would have required a guilty plea to manslaughter for a ten-year sentence.
Trial
Lewis's trial began in February 2008. The defense argued that A.J.'s statements were unreliable because his story changed during repeated questioning. Other evidence included statements from Lewis's co-workers, evidence of poor housekeeping, the lack of toys and Lewis's deception about them, and an autopsy by medical examiner Charles Siebert, who had previously been removed from duty for negligence in thirty-six cases and reinstated under supervision; before trial, Siebert had been removed again and left the state. The prosecution noted multiple bruises on Adrianna's forehead that they said matched A.J.'s testimony. On the second day, two jurors failed to return, requiring substitutes. After four days of proceedings and two hours of deliberation, the jury found Lewis guilty of first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse. She was sentenced to life without parole in March 2008.
In the media
Three television shows have covered the case: the Investigation Discovery series True Crime with Aphrodite Jones; a 20/20 episode titled "What A.J. Saw: Mother's Fate Hinged on 7-Year-Old's Testimony"; and an episode of the UK documentary series Killer Women with Piers Morgan. The podcast IN ESTO: What Really Happened to Adrianna Hutto? By N Leigh Hunt was released in 2024 and won two High Commended awards at the True Crime Awards UK in 2025, also receiving a Clue Award nomination at Crime Con 2025. The Undisclosed podcast produced an 11-episode series about the drowning in 2025, during which the hosts uncovered four possible grounds for appeal: the judge removing a competent juror outside Lewis's presence and without her approval; a second juror failing to disclose that she overheard the lead police officer falsely claiming Lewis was a drug addict who should never have had children; and that second juror being only 17 years old.
