Development

In July 2015, Public Service Media announced it would produce a local version of the UK singing competition Pop Idol. To prepare, a team from the broadcaster traveled to India to study the production of Indian Idol Junior. Later that year, Dhiraagu became the show’s title sponsor, with Allied Insurance serving as co-main sponsor. On 7 October 2015, the judges—Ahmed Ibrahim, Ibrahim Ali, and Unoosha—were announced, alongside hosts Moosa Waseem and Aishath Maureena. FremantleMedia UK selected this panel from six candidates. The series premiered on 22 January 2015 with roughly 600 contestants and four stages: Open Audition, Theatre Round, Piano Round, and Gala Round. Public voting started in the third round, counting for half the result, with judges’ votes making up the other half. Aishath Azma and Mujthaba Rasheed directed the show, assisted by Samhaan Hameed and Shahiya Moosa. Mua Anwar served as creative director.
