History
The show launched in 2006 as a spin-off of the Idol format. For its first two seasons, judges could use a Power of Veto to save one of the bottom two contestants at the end of each episode. This changed in the third season in 2008, when the program finally secured a license from FremantleMedia, the Idol franchise owner. From that point, the rules aligned with other Idol shows, leaving the contestants' fate entirely to the viewers. The sixth season ran from October 2010 to the end of December 2011. After six seasons under the name Geostari, the broadcaster Rustavi 2 planned a 2012 relaunch with the new title Sakartvelos Varskvlavi (Georgian Idol). A September premiere was postponed because of the 2012 Georgian protests. The program eventually came back in 2019, this time serving as the selection method for Georgia’s Eurovision Song Contest entry.
