El Gran Show

Peruvian dance competition where dreams come true through viewer votes.

El Gran Show ("The Amazing Show") is a Peruvian dance reality competition that aired on América Televisión from 2010 to 2017. It is the Peruvian adaptation of the Mexican series Bailando por un sueño, which itself originates from the British format Strictly Come Dancing, the foundation of the Dancing with the Stars franchise. The program pairs celebrities with amateur dancers, called Dreamers, who compete to fulfill a personal or charitable dream through viewer votes.

Cast

Gisela Valcárcel has hosted the program since its 2010 premiere. Cristian Rivero served as co-host for seasons one through five; season six had no co-host. Óscar López Arias was co-host for seasons seven and eight (2012), followed by Paco Bazán from seasons nine through fourteen (2013–15). In 2016, Jaime "Choca" Mandros (a season nine participant) co-hosted season fifteen, and Miguel Arce co-hosted season sixteen. The regular judges across all seasons are Morella Petrozzi and Pachi Valle Riestra; Carlos Cacho joined from season eight. Other judges who served shorter periods include Carlos Alcántara, Stuart Bishop, Alexis Grullón, Rosanna Lignarolo, Phillip Butters, Max Suffrau, Alfredo Di Natale, and Michelle Alexander. Guest judges—often from dance, music, acting, or television—have included Marco Zunino, Vania Masías, Johanna San Miguel, Abel Talamantez, Federico Salazar, Fiorella Rodríguez, and Bettina Oneto. In 2016, each week featured a guest judge who could award couples 1 or 2 extra points or decline to do so.

Scoring and voting procedure

In the first season, all eleven couples (a celebrity hero and an amateur dreamer) danced the same style each week. Each judge awarded a score from 1 to 10, for a possible total of 4 to 40. One judge's score was kept secret during the broadcast and revealed only at the end, preventing couples from calculating their final total and maintaining suspense until "The Case." The two couples with the lowest combined scores were placed in the bottom two and automatically at risk of elimination. Viewers had the entire week (Saturday to Saturday) to vote by telephone for their favorite couple; the sentenced couples campaigned for votes. On the following Saturday, the bottom two couples performed a duel, dancing a different style than the non-sentenced couples, accompanied by professional dancers. During the broadcast, the couples' represented cities were connected live to show family support, sometimes including the mayor. Before the judgment, host Gisela Valcárcel revealed the vote percentages for the two couples; the couple with the lower percentage was eliminated and their score voided. Starting in the sixth gala of the first season, and also used in the second season of El Show de Los Sueños, "Faith Balls" were introduced. A large glass cup containing eight secret balls—six bearing the El Gran Show logo and two marked with an "X"—was brought onstage. Each of the bottom two couples chose one ball. If a couple drew a logo ball, Gisela canceled the percentages and both couples were automatically safe. If a couple drew an "X," the percentages were read and one couple was eliminated.
