Search for contestants

An extensive online search is conducted for the selection process. Applicants must be of Indonesian descent or nationality and able to speak and write in both English and Indonesian. Previous participants of other Top Model franchises may apply if they were not winners and are not under contractual obligations with an agency or endorsing any product.

Format

Each season has about 40 regular episodes plus a special recap episode near the end. Seasons begin with 16-18 contestants, who are judged weekly on overall appearance, challenge participation, and their best photo or video from that week's shoot. One contestant is eliminated per episode, though double eliminations or non-eliminations have occurred by panel consensus. Makeovers are given early in the season, usually after the first elimination, and an international trip is sometimes scheduled about two-thirds through the season. Unlike the American version, contestants receive instruction from a mentor who coaches them and assists during shoots and challenges. The Indonesian version airs twice a week instead of once. Mentors and judges have included former Indonesian representatives of Asia's Next Top Model: Patricia Gouw (runner-up of cycle 4) served as a judge in cycle 1, while Ayu Gani (winner of cycle 3) and Jesslyn Lim (cycle 6) were model mentor and guest judge. In cycle 2, Ayu Gani replaced Patricia Gouw as judge. In cycle 3, former Asia's Next Top Model cycle 6 contestant Iko Bustomi competed as a contestant.

Judges

The original panel included Indonesian supermodel and actress Luna Maya as host, former mentalist Deddy Corbuzier as creative consultant, fashion model Patricia Gouw as judge, and fashion choreographer Panca Makmun as judge, catwalk coach, and main model mentor. Ayu Gani and Jesslyn Lim, Indonesian representatives from Asia's Next Top Model, served as model mentors during the first cycle. For the second and third cycles, Corbuzier and Gouw left and were replaced by Ayu Gani and fashion designer Ivan Gunawan, who had been a guest judge in cycle 1. Additional judges across cycles have included Nagita Slavina, Andien, Dave Hendrik, Cathy Sharon, Sophia Latjuba, Kimmy Jayanti, Kelly Tandiono, Asmara Abigail, Whulandary Herman, and Paula Verhoeven. Guest model mentors have included Ayu Gani, Jesslyn Lim, Wulan Guritno, Della Dartyan, Dwi Sasono, Kimmy Jayanti, Asmara Abigail, and Whulandary Herman. Panca Makmun served as runway coach.

Controversies

During a cycle 1 judging panel, contestant Ilene (later the winner) shared her battle with depression and an eating disorder in response to Luna Maya's question about her photoshoot concept. Deddy Corbuzier interrupted, saying, 'Depression? ... You're pretty, you're a model. You're also tall, sexy, and smart. If you're depressed, you're insulting the martabak vendor in front of my house.' Luna added, 'I really like eating, so [do I have an] eating disorder?' The remarks drew backlash from viewers, psychiatrists, celebrities, and former Asia's Next Top Model host Nadya Hutagalung. Felicia Hutapea criticized Luna and Deddy on Instagram, and Luna responded via direct message that 'everyone went through depression' and that Felicia was 'such a child.' Luna and Deddy later apologized on Instagram, and the remarks were edited out of the episode on the show's official YouTube channel. In cycle 3, during an elimination, contestants Shynka and Kezia were in the bottom two. Luna announced Shynka was safe, eliminating Kezia, but Shynka tearfully said she would rather quit, feeling unappreciated by the judges. Luna responded that if the judges did not appreciate her hard work, she would have been eliminated, and that Shynka did not appreciate her own ability. The judges allowed Shynka to quit, and Kezia was saved. After the episode aired, Luna posted a vlog on YouTube in which she called Shynka 'bego' (very stupid) and mocked her decision. Luna received criticism in the comments, and those statements were later edited out of the video. Viewers debated whether Shynka's decision to quit warranted such a response.
