The Race
The Amazing Race is a reality competition between teams of two racing across Latin America. Each season consists of multiple legs; teams travel, complete tasks, and obtain clues to reach a Pit Stop, where they rest before the next leg begins twelve hours later. The first team to arrive at a Pit Stop usually wins a prize, while the last team is normally eliminated, except during non-elimination legs where the last team may face a penalty in the following leg. The final leg features the last three remaining teams, and the first to reach the final destination wins the cash prize: 250,000 for seasons 1 through 5, and 100,000 for season 6.
Each of the eleven teams consists of two individuals with a pre-existing relationship. A total of 66 participants have competed. All participants must be able to communicate in Spanish; Brazilian citizens must also speak Portuguese. Contestants come from various Latin American countries, excluding Cuba, French Guiana, Puerto Rico, and the Lesser Antilles (except Aruba, Curaçao, and Trinidad and Tobago). Teams from Jamaica and the Bahamas may also participate.
Route Markers are yellow and red flags indicating where teams must go; in the first two seasons, these markers were blue and black, and the Pit Stop mat was red, blue, and black. Clues are written in both Spanish and Portuguese and are found in sealed envelopes inside clue boxes. Clue types include Pista (Route Info), which may involve a task; Desvío/Desvio (Detour), a choice between two tasks; and Obstáculo (Roadblock), a task that only one team member may complete, chosen based on a brief clue before the task details are revealed.
