Making and release
Creators Christopher Lloyd and Steven Levitan developed the idea after sharing stories about their own families, originally conceiving it as a mockumentary called My American Family with a fictional Dutch filmmaker.[3] Lloyd and Levitan pitched the series to CBS, NBC, and ABC, but CBS was not ready for single-camera filming and NBC already had two mockumentary shows.[4] Principal photography took place in Los Angeles, with the Dunphys' house located in the Cheviot Hills neighborhood.[5][6] The series was renewed for a 9th and 10th season on May 10, 2017, with season 9 premiering September 27, 2017, and season 10 on September 26, 2018.[7]
The series earned $2.13 million an episode in 2012, making it the 10th-highest revenue-generating show that year.[8] ABC ordered 13 episodes and scheduled the series for its 2009–10 fall lineup after the pilot received positive feedback from focus groups.[9] NBCUniversal's USA Network and Fox Television Stations acquired the broadcast syndication rights, with the series premiering in syndication in fall 2013.[8] Peacock and Hulu both stream the series as of 2025.[10]
What the cited sources add
A 2020 article from The Daily Fandom notes that the show became popular for its portrayal of realistic and relatable family dynamics.[11] The same source describes the Dunphys as a traditional nuclear family with Phil as the "fun parent" and Claire as the "helicopter mom".[11] The Pritchett-Delgado family serves as an example of a non-traditional step-family, exploring the challenges and benefits of blended families.[11] The Pritchett-Tucker family represents a homosexual family household that reinvents the status quo of what it means to be a modern family.[11]
