An NBC press release described the show as showcasing young musicians, singers, dancers and wunderkinds.[1] The Futon Critic reported that season two delivered a 1.8 rating in adults 18-49 and 10.3 million viewers overall.[8] The same source noted the show won its Sunday 8-9 PM time period among the Big 4 networks in adults 18-49.[8] Deadline Hollywood reported that securing McCarthy was considered a "big coup" for NBC.[2]

TVLine stated the fourth season was "completely reimagined" with McCarthy as host.[6]
