Drop Dead Diva

A model's soul returns to life in a plus-sized lawyer's body.

The series follows a shallow model who dies and finds her soul in the body of a brilliant, plus-sized attorney.[1] Berman stated the show aimed to redefine Hollywood's beauty paradigm beyond "size 2 and under 25".[2]

Making and release

Filming took place in Peachtree City, Georgia, and Senoia, Georgia, with principal photography in a hangar at Atlanta Regional Airport.[3] The season-four finale had 2.76 million viewers, a season high.[4] One and a half months later, Lifetime reversed its decision and renewed the series for a fifth season.[5][4] The production of the series was located in Georgia because of tax incentives offered there.[3]

Lifetime declared on January 15, 2013, that the show would not continue past its fourth season.[4] The network's choice to end the series followed discussions with Sony Pictures Television about reducing expenses.[4] A sixth and final season was ordered by Lifetime in October 2013.[5] The sixth season began airing on March 23, 2014, and its final episode aired on June 22, 2014.[5]

What the cited sources add

A Deadline Hollywood report states Drop Dead Diva earned multiple GLAAD Awards and a Humanitas nomination.[1] The same report notes the series developed a devoted fan following that helped reverse its cancellation after four seasons.[1] A Geektown page reports the show was dropped by Sky Living in the UK and then made available on Netflix.[6] A South Korean adaptation, Goddess of the Court, was announced by MBC in 2017.[7]

Production on a Spanish-language version, Ligeramente diva, started in May 2022 by Sony Pictures Television Latin America, and it debuted on Mercado Play on June 18, 2024.[8]
