Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants Unleashed is a 2024 platform beat 'em up video game developed by Aheartfulofgames and published by Outright Games. Set in the universe of the film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, the story follows the Turtles shortly after the film's events as they navigate high school and a new wave of mutant chaos in New York City. Plot
After the Turtles defeat Superfly and are accepted as heroes and normal teenagers, mutants called Mewbies begin immigrating to New York City. Community centers open shelters to foster co-existence, but the Mewbies suddenly become aggressive, prompting a citywide curfew and school cancellation. At a concert by Ray Fillet, Bebop and Rocksteady turn hostile; the Turtles subdue them and learn the aggression stems from contaminated water containing an unknown pheromone harmful only to mutants. With help from Donatello's friend Sai Modi, they study the pheromone, but Genghis Frog becomes infected. At the water treatment plant, the Turtles defeat Genghis and encounter the culprit, a mutant chameleon named Cammy Leon, who wants to perpetuate the perception of mutants as threats. They also find Leatherhead affected via airborne pheromone from subway travel and defeat her. The Turtles free them, and Sai develops a cure, which they administer via pizzas.
Development
Outright Games announced the game in September 2023 for unspecified consoles and Windows. In March 2024, the title and developer Aheartfulofgames were revealed. The game was released on October 18, 2024, for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Windows. Two special editions were available: the Deluxe Edition, including an exclusive steelbook, pin badges, keychains, and an artbook; and the Collector's Edition, which added a season pass, statue, poster, LED sign, mouse mat, notebook, pen, stickers, and collector's box. A downloadable content expansion titled Fresh Meat was released in December 2024, featuring a new storyline and missions.
Reception
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants Unleashed received mixed or average reviews according to Metacritic. In Japan, four Famitsu critics gave it a total score of 25 out of 40. Luke Reily of IGN rated it 5 out of 10, praising the visuals and voice acting but criticizing reused levels, frequent lengthy loading screens, lack of exploration, poor camera controls, shallow combat, and slim enemy selection. Jim Norman of Nintendo Life also gave a 5 out of 10, highlighting side content, storyline, and voice acting as positives, but noting reused levels, loading screens, frame rate drops, crashes, poor camera controls, and lack of visual flair compared to Mutant Mayhem. Neal Ronaghan of Nintendo World Report awarded a 6 out of 10, commending the writing, storyline, and fusion of beat 'em up and RPG gameplay, while criticizing shallow combat, limited multiplayer, and technical issues on the Switch.
