Gameplay

Plants vs. Zombies: Replanted retains the lane-based tower defense mechanics of the original, where players defend their home from zombies by placing plants using sun currency. Sun is collected from the sky during daytime or generated by sun-producing plants like sunflowers. Some plants attack zombies, while others serve defensive roles. Victory occurs when all zombies are defeated; if a zombie reaches the left side, a lawn mower clears the row, but if the mower is already used, another crossing ends the game. The remaster supports widescreen and resolutions up to 4K, replacing the original's 800x600 4:3 aspect ratio. Full controller support is included, along with local multiplayer modes from the seventh-generation console ports: co-op with assigned roles and Versus where one player controls plants and the other zombies. No online multiplayer is planned, but Steam Remote Play was added later for Windows users. Quality-of-life features include adjustable game speed up to 2.5x, a Sun Magnet for mass collecting sun, and number key hotkeys for quick plant selection on Windows. Two new game modes are introduced: Cloudy Day, a set of non-linear Adventure levels where only Sunflowers produce sun, with reduced sky and plant sun output and rain clouds that halt sun but halve plant costs and speed recharge; and R.I.P. Mode, a harder Adventure difficulty that resets the player to the beginning upon any loss.

Development

A remastered Plants vs. Zombies game was first hinted at in a 2025 interview with Janet Robin of The String Revolution, who had worked with the franchise on a vinyl project through Iam8bit. Robin mentioned that EA had asked her group to record an acoustic version of the track "Crazy Dave" for an anniversary edition, which would also serve as a nod to Billie Eilish's song "Bad Guy." The title, Plants vs. Zombies: Replanted, was officially revealed during a Nintendo Direct in late July 2025, with pre-order bonuses including a retro-styled Peashooter skin. The game appeared at PAX West on August 25, 2025. A developer diary posted to YouTube on October 17, 2025 featured general director Nick Reinhart, executive producer Jake Neri, and brand director Matt Townsend. The same trio hosted a panel at TwitchCon 2025.

Reception

Plants vs. Zombies: Replanted received generally favorable reviews on Windows, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2 according to Metacritic, while the Xbox Series X version received mixed or average reviews. OpenCritic reported that 57% of critics recommended the game. IGN's Alessandro Fillari called it a good way to reacquaint with the original but noted questionable decisions. Shacknews' David Craddock described it as his favorite version, praising its content and justifying its price. The Verge called it a time capsule from a simpler time. Game Informer's Kyle Hilliard commended its faithfulness and new animations. Noah Hunter for Final Weapon called the remake solid but criticized missing features and bugs. Ben Lyons from Gamereactor found it the same as the original and questioned the price. Rich Werner, the original character designer, claimed that some concept art in the game, including Disco Zombie art, was fabricated; the Disco Zombie design was created after the Michael Jackson estate requested the removal of the original Dancing Zombie. Werner also stated that EA contacted him and composer Laura Shigihara for a music video that was later cancelled after his public response on X. Shigihara initially welcomed the remaster but later expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of dynamic music, which was added in a later patch.
