The 1977 New York Yankees season was the 75th season for the Yankees. The team finished with a record of 100–62 and won the World Series. The series victory was the 21st title in franchise history and the first under the ownership of George Steinbrenner. New York was managed by Billy Martin and played at Yankee Stadium in The Bronx.

Reggie Jackson signed a five-year, $2.96 million contract on November 29, 1976. He asked for uniform number 9 but it was worn by Graig Nettles, so he took number 44, Hank Aaron's number. Jackson's first season was difficult; manager Billy Martin feuded with him and owner George Steinbrenner. In a June 18 game, Martin pulled Jackson from the field for failing to hustle, and Martin had to be restrained from fighting Jackson. Thurman Munson was initially happy about Jackson's arrival but became disturbed when Steinbrenner did not honor a verbal agreement to keep Munson the highest-paid player.
