National military park
One of four U.S. federal designations for nationally important battlefields.
Last updated
National military park is one of four labels the U.S. federal government uses for battlefields it preserves as nationally significant. The National Park Service manages all four designations identically.
Congress created the first such site, Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, in 1890. The War Department originally oversaw these areas, but they moved to the National Park Service on August 10, 1933. The term "park" generally indicates a larger site.
