Background
He was born in New York City to the writers William Lindsay Gresham and Joy Davidman. After his parents separated in 1954, his mother moved to England with Douglas and his elder brother David. Joy became friends with Lewis through letters, and the two married in 1956.
Lewis adopted both boys when he married, and The Horse and His Boy is dedicated to them. Joy died of cancer in 1960 and Lewis went on raising the brothers. When Lewis died in 1963, his estate passed to his brother Major Warren Hamilton Lewis, who handed it on to Douglas and David ten years later.
Gresham hosted Focus on the Family Radio Theatre's versions of his stepfather's best-known books. He co-produced the Narnia films and made cameos in all three: a radio newscaster in the first, a Telmarine crier in the second and a slaver in the third.
