Summary

The 2022–23 season reintroduced playoff matches for the first time since 2005; if two teams tied atop the standings, a neutral-site match with no extra time and direct penalty shoot-out would decide the champion, while head-to-head remained the tiebreaker elsewhere. In February, the Lega Serie A announced plans for a tournament in the United States during the 2022 FIFA World Cup, involving players not called up for national teams, aiming to maintain player activity and boost the league's image abroad. The idea received mixed feedback and was ultimately cancelled due to logistical and funding issues. On 28 July 2023, UEFA confirmed Juventus violated finance regulations, leading to penalties including exclusion from the 2023–24 UEFA Europa Conference League.

Teams

Cremonese returned to Serie A after 26 years, Lecce after two years, and Monza were promoted for the first time in club history, becoming the 67th team to play in Italy's top flight. Cagliari were relegated after six years, Venezia after one, and Genoa after 15 seasons, ending their longest consecutive top-league run. This was the first season since 2003–04 without any team from Sardinia or Sicily.
