Napoli traces its roots to Naples Foot-Ball & Cricket Club, founded in 1905 by English sailor William Poths and Hector M. Bayon. The club's early years saw limited success, with the first major trophy being the 1962 Coppa Italia. The arrival of Diego Maradona in 1984 brought unprecedented success, including the club's first two Serie A titles in 1987 and 1990, the 1987 Coppa Italia, the 1990 Supercoppa Italiana, and the 1989 UEFA Cup. After Maradona's departure in 1991, Napoli struggled financially, endured relegations and bankruptcy, and was re-founded in 2004 by film producer Aurelio De Laurentiis. The club returned to Serie A three years later and has since won three Coppe Italia (2012, 2014, 2020), two Supercoppe Italiane (1990, 2014), and two Serie A titles (2023, 2025).
