How it changed
After Neighborhood Story ended in 1996, Yazawa switched from dip pens and brushes to drawing pens, oil pastels and markers.[2] At age 10, Yazawa began reading manga magazines; at 12, she submitted her first manga attempt to Ribon Manga School and was placed in the lowest class.[3] Around age 15, Yazawa started serious training and submissions, which eventually allowed her to advance to a higher class.[3] Yazawa's tenth submission to Ribon, the short story Ano Natsu, was published in 1985 and marked her debut as a professional manga artist.[4]
Her series I'm No Angel was serialized in Ribon from 1991 to 1995 and served as her breakthrough work.[5] Due to an illness that required hospitalization in June 2009, Yazawa placed Nana on an indefinite hiatus.[6][7] In 2022, Yazawa mentioned that her recovery was ongoing and that she hoped to resume Nana at some point.[6]
What the maker and period sources say
The same source stated that Yazawa needed several months of treatment and rest, and Nana would not appear in the September issue or later issues until further notice.[7] Anime News Network also noted that Nana had previously been on hiatus from June to November 2007 while Yazawa recuperated from another illness and an operation.[7] Anime News Network reported that the August edition of Cookie magazine (published by Shueisha) announced Yazawa was halting Nana because of a sudden illness.[7] Anime News Network reported that Yazawa stated in Kobunsha's Josei Jishin magazine that she came home in early April from a Tokyo hospital where she had been treated for an unspecified serious illness.[8]
