Lore & Background
The Lord Ruler is the god-king of the Final Empire, having ruled for a thousand years after ascending at the Well of Ascension. He is believed to be the Hero of Ages, who repelled the Deepness and saved mankind, but the world was changed into its current form of falling ash and brown plants. In truth, he is Rashek, a Terrisman advisor who killed the real Hero and took his place. By combining Allomancy with Feruchemy, he gained incredible healing powers and eternal youth, which he maintained through Feruchemical bracelets.
He rules with an iron fist, dividing society into nobility and skaa, and enforces his will through the Canton of Inquisition and its Steel Inquisitors—seemingly indestructible Allomancers with steel spikes driven through their eyes. The economy of the Final Empire is built on atium, a precious metal he hoards. His reign ends when Vin separates him from his Feruchemical bracelets, causing him to age rapidly, and she executes him with a spear. His last words ominously warn her of a great doom.
Reader's Guide
The Lord Ruler serves as the primary antagonist of Mistborn: The Final Empire. He is an immortal tyrant who has ruled for a thousand years, maintaining power through a combination of Allomancy and Feruchemy. His abilities include incredible healing powers and eternal youth, derived from his Feruchemical bracelets. He is also an incredibly powerful Allomancer. His rule is enforced by the Canton of Inquisition, whose Steel Inquisitors are seemingly indestructible Allomancers with steel spikes through their eyes. Key moments include his killing of Kelsier in the city square, his confrontation with Vin in the imperial palace, and his final defeat when Vin separates him from his bracelets and executes him. His death leads to the collapse of the Final Empire, though he warns of a great doom.
The Mechanics of Oppression
The Lord Ruler enforces his rule through the Canton of Inquisition, the police arm of the Final Empire made up of Steel Inquisitors—seemingly indestructible Allomancers with steel spikes driven through their eyes. Society is stratified into the nobility, believed to be descendants of his allies, and the brutally oppressed skaa, descended from those who opposed him. The economy is built on atium, a precious metal hoarded by the Lord Ruler. Allomancy is central to the setting, allowing users to gain supernatural abilities by swallowing and burning specific metals. Allomantic potential is concentrated in the nobility, though skaa Allomancers exist due to crossbreeding.
Kelsier's Revolutionary Gambit
Kelsier, a half-skaa Mistborn, plans to overthrow the Final Empire by stealing the Lord Ruler's hoard of atium and collapsing its economy. He recruits Vin, a street urchin and Mistborn, and trains her. Kelsier's crew succeeds in starting a house war and recruiting soldiers, but most are slaughtered. Kelsier is killed by the Lord Ruler in a dramatic confrontation in Luthadel's city square, but this was his real plan: to become a martyred symbol of hope for the superstitious skaa, who then rise up and overthrow the city.
The Fall of Rashek
Vin goes to the imperial palace to kill the Lord Ruler with the Eleventh Metal. She is captured by the Canton of Inquisition but escapes with Sazed's help. She fights the Lord Ruler and recognizes him as Rashek, not the Hero of Ages. With hints from the Eleventh Metal and unexpected aid from the mists, she separates him from his Feruchemical bracelets, causing him to age rapidly. She executes him with a spear. His last words warn her of a great doom. The Final Empire collapses, and Elend Venture unites Luthadel under a democratic government.
