Rollie Fingers

Hall of Fame closer who won the 1981 AL MVP and Cy Young with Milwaukee.

Rollie Fingers is a former right-handed relief pitcher who played in the majors from 1968 to 1985 for three teams, and whose effectiveness helped create the modern closer role. A seven-time All-Star, he led the majors in saves three times. After the 1980 season the Padres traded him to St. Louis, and days later the Cardinals sent him to Milwaukee together with Ted Simmons and Pete Vuckovich for Sixto Lezcano, Lary Sorensen, David Green and Dave LaPoint.

In the strike-shortened 1981 season he saved 28 games with a 1.04 ERA, allowing only nine runs in 78 innings, and won both the American League MVP and Cy Young awards as the Brewers reached the playoffs for the first time. He saved 29 games in 1982 while pitching in pain and missed the club's World Series against the Cardinals. In 1984 he passed Ken Sanders' franchise mark of 61 saves, and he held the Brewers' career saves record from 1984 to 1989. Milwaukee retired his number after his Hall of Fame induction.
