Michael Schumacher
Seven-time champion who came back to race for the resurrected Mercedes team.
Michael Schumacher (born 3 January 1969) is a German former racing driver who won a record-setting seven Formula One World Drivers' Championship titles, tied by Lewis Hamilton in 2020; at the time of his retirement he held the records for most wins (91), pole positions (68) and podium finishes (155), and he still holds the record for most fastest laps (77). His link with Mercedes began in 1990, when he joined the Mercedes-Benz junior racing programme in the World Sportscar Championship alongside Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Karl Wendlinger and won the season finale at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in a Sauber–Mercedes C11; in 1991 he won again, at Autopolis in Japan, in a Sauber–Mercedes-Benz C291.
Still a contracted Mercedes driver, he made his Formula One debut with Jordan after Mercedes paid Jordan $150,000. After his first retirement from Formula One he returned with the resurrected Mercedes team, partnering Nico Rosberg, claimed his final podium with them, and has been credited with elevating the project to championship-winning form.
