Background

He joined a team that had last won the drivers' title in 1979, on a two-year deal worth $60 million, and in 1997 brought designer Rory Byrne and technical director Ross Brawn over from Benetton. He was third in 1996, and in 1999 helped Ferrari win its first constructors' title since 1983. In 2000 he beat Mika Hakkinen to the drivers' title, ending a 21-year wait, which he later called the fight of his life. In 2002 Ferrari won 15 of 17 races and he clinched the title with six races still to run, the earliest any driver has done so.
