In Their Own Story

The river was black with silt and the dawn light hadn't yet found the far bank. Sergeant Calloway crouched behind a shattered concrete abutment, his rifle barrel still warm from the last three seconds of life. The bridge stretched ahead of him—forty, maybe fifty meters of steel grating and broken handrails, swaying faintly in the wind that came off the water. On the other side, muzzle flashes stuttered in the grey half-light. He could hear boots on the far deck, the clink of a bayonet being fixed, a voice calling out in a language he didn't need to understand. He counted his rounds. He counted his men. Three were still breathing. He pushed off the abutment and ran for the span, the river below roaring up to meet him, and the world narrowed to the width of a bridge and the length of a rifle barrel.
