Development
The project that would become Dawn of Fantasy started in 2001, when a team of scenario editors from Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings came together under the leadership of Micah Hymer, John Lockwood, and Kristo Vaher. At first it was a medieval strategy game, but by late 2002 it had been reworked into a fantasy title. For most of its development, the independent studio Reverie World Studios (first called Reverie Entertainment) relied on funding from the Canadian Government's Telefilm Grant. The game was picked up by Lighthouse Interactive, but that publisher went bankrupt soon after. On September 1, 2012, the game was put on Steam Greenlight, and on November 30 it became one of the first 50 titles voted onto the platform by the public. Joel Steudler composed the original score, and the Mithrill game engine, built by John Lockwood, powered the game.
