Development and release

MZ developed the game through its subsidiary Epic Action LLC, with Square Enix providing a crash course on art direction. Reviewers noted its similarity to MZ's Game of War: Fire Age, with some calling it a blatant clone. The game launched worldwide on June 28, 2017, and its marketing campaign featured American model Alexis Ren.

Reception

Critics gave mixed responses, focusing on the game's use of the Final Fantasy XV franchise, base-building gameplay, and purchasable add-ons. Jennifer Allen of Gamezebo described the gameplay as soullessly exploitative and repetitive to the extreme. Ryan Whitwam of Android Police called it pay-to-win junk and a generic city builder with on-the-rails combat dressed as a Final Fantasy title. Reviewers also expressed frustration with the tutorial, which emphasized base-building mechanics at the expense of other core elements. Some outlets viewed the game's interpretation of the Final Fantasy universe as poor, serving MZ's intended audience of casual mobile gamers. Edgar Cervantes of Android Authority suggested it was an attempt to expand beyond the usual audience. Polygon's Allegra Frank noted the disparity in App Store ratings between Final Fantasy fans and Mobile Strike players, stating there was little in common between A New Empire and the original game. By October 2017, the game had over 20 million downloads and was the 14th top-grossing game on the American App Store. In its first year, by June 2018, downloads exceeded 45 million across the App Store and Google Play. The United States accounted for 32% of downloads and Japan for 5%. By January 2018 it was the month's ninth highest-grossing game on Google Play. By June 2018 the game had grossed over $518 million worldwide, with the United States and Japan accounting for unspecified shares of revenue.
