History

The company began as a social networking site called NetJovens for Portuguese youth in 2004. The project attracted the interest of magazine publisher Edimpresa, a joint venture between European publisher Edipresse and Portuguese media conglomerate Impresa. In October 2007, Edimpresa acquired a 51% majority stake for close to one million euros. In 2008, Netjovens.pt rebranded to Chilltime.com in an attempt to go international. During this period, Impresa bought the remaining 50% stake in Edimpresa from Edipresse, so the 51% stake of Chilltime then belonged to Impresa. In December 2009, the founder repurchased that 51% stake for an undisclosed amount. Impresa stated the company no longer fit its portfolio due to international competition from social networking sites, and the founder said Chilltime would focus on new projects not based on an advertising model or the Portuguese national market. World War Online, a freemium PvP real-time strategy browser game, was developed and published by Chilltime in 2010. It is available in over 100 countries with active players in over 50. Players build bases to produce money, food, bricks, and grain, train military units, and use WWO-influence to create bases, accelerate upgrades, or train strong units. Players join squads to conquer capitals and earn points on the leaderboard; at the end of each four-month season, winners receive real physical medals. World War Online was released in August 2010.
