Lore & Background
In 1904 the 17-year-old Enzo and his friend Gaetano work in the sulfur mines of Don Ruggero Spadaro under the abusive underboss Damiano "Il Merlo" Bastoni. Their plan to leave Sicily collapses when a gas leak brings down part of the mine, burying Gaetano alive along with the money meant to pay off their debts. Enzo scars Il Merlo in a knife fight and runs; cornered by Spadaro's men, he is rescued by Don Bernardo Torrisi. He goes to work for Torrisi under the underboss Luca Trapani, collecting pizzo and even standing in for a jockey in a prestigious horse race, and meets the Don's nephew Cesare Massaro and his daughter Isabella, who becomes attracted to him.
