Lore & Background
Hangar 13 was formed around September 2013, when 2K Games announced that Rod Fergusson would be running a new San Francisco studio. However, Fergusson left the position by January 2014, which he claimed was due to 'creative differences' with management. On December 4, 2014, 2K announced that it had set up a new game studio, Hangar 13, led by Haden Blackman. In February 2018, Hangar 13 was hit with sizable layoffs. In May 2018, Hangar 13 opened an additional studio in Brighton, UK, headed by Nick Baynes. In July 2018, the studio announced it was working on a new intellectual property. In March 2019, the studio collaborated with Gearbox Software to develop a free update for Borderlands: The Handsome Collection. In May 2020, 2K and Hangar 13 announced the Mafia: Trilogy. In November 2021, an unannounced game by Hangar 13, codenamed Volt, was cancelled. In May 2022, Blackman announced his impending departure, succeeded by Nick Baynes. Later that month, Hangar 13 laid off people across its four studios. In August 2022, development on a new Mafia game was confirmed to have started.
In Their Own Story
The rain hammered the cracked asphalt of New Bordeaux's French Ward. In a cramped office above a jazz club, a young designer stared at a monitor displaying a rough model of Lincoln Clay. The team had been debating the protagonist's backstory for weeks—should he be a former soldier or a career criminal? The decision to make him a Vietnam vet felt right, a way to explore the city's racial tensions. Outside, the neon sign flickered, casting a red glow across the desk. The designer saved the file and leaned back, knowing this would change the Mafia series forever.
