Riko

The orphan Cave Raider-in-training who descends to find her mother.

Riko is the 12-year-old heroine of Made in Abyss, an energetic, accident-prone Cave Raider-in-training at the Belchero Orphanage in Orth. She dreams of becoming a White Whistle like her mother, the legendary Lyza the Annihilator, who vanished into the Abyss ten years earlier. After finding the robot boy Reg in the first layer and receiving a note that seems to say her mother waits at the bottom, she slips away from the orphanage and descends with him.

Background

Against orphanage rules she quietly kept some of her finds, notably the Star Compass, which she hopes will guide her down. She was born stillborn during one of Lyza's expeditions and was carried back to the surface by Lyza and Ozen inside a relic known as the Curse-Repelling Vessel; one lasting effect of the Curse is that she gets headaches unless she sees the world through a crystal lens, which is why she wears glasses.
