Filming for the ninth season of Love & Hip Hop: New York got underway in June 2018. VH1 officially announced the season's return on September 27, 2018, with a premiere date set for November 26, 2018. After being away for four years, Cyn Santana and Joe Budden came back to the show, joining Kimbella and Juelz Santana, while rapper Maino was added to the cast. A teaser released on November 5, 2018, carried the tagline "the comeback season begins" and confirmed that Rich Dollaz, a supporting cast member every previous season, had been elevated to the main cast alongside Budden, Papoose, Juelz, and Safaree.

The opening credits list three couples together: Remy and Papoose, Joe and Cyn, and Kimbella and Juelz. Returning as supporting cast were Mariahlynn, Anaís, and Nya Lee, joined by Maino, his girlfriend Maggie Carrie, Love & Hip Hop: Hollywood's Alexis Skyy, and transgender rapper Sidney Starr. The promotional videos for the season adopted a nostalgic, old-school look, emphasizing the show's couples and original cast members. On November 13, 2018, VH1 started releasing interviews with Yandy, Rich, Remy, and Safaree reflecting on their time with the series.

A five-minute supertrailer dropped on November 19, 2018, followed by a five-minute sneak peek from the premiere on November 21, 2018. The season also featured an official podcast titled Love & Hip Hop: The Tea, hosted by Jesse Janedy, TK Trinidad, and Lem Gonsalves.
