Peoria Suns

Short-lived 1983 Peoria team that became the Chiefs.

Last updated

The Peoria Suns were a Minor League Baseball team that began play in 1983 when the Danville Suns relocated to Peoria, Illinois. The team played its home games at Meinen Field, built in 1968, near the Bradley University campus. The Suns were the first professional baseball team in Peoria since the original Chiefs disbanded after 1957, ending a 25-year gap without pro ball in the city. The team's name was changed to the Chiefs in 1984, making the Suns a one-season entity.

Background

The Peoria Suns arrived in 1983 as a relocation of the Danville Suns, bringing Minor League Baseball back to Peoria after a 25-year absence. The team played at Meinen Field, a ballpark built in 1968 near Bradley University. The Suns' single season featured future Major League Baseball manager Joe Maddon, who managed the 1984 Chiefs. The team's name was changed to the Chiefs in 1984, and the franchise has remained in Peoria ever since, later moving to Dozer Park in 2002.
