Provo Angels
Former Angels affiliate in Provo, Utah, from 2001 to 2004.
Last updated
For four seasons starting in 2001, the Provo Angels served as a Rookie League affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels in the Pioneer League. Based in Provo, Utah, the team played its home games at Larry H. Miller Field on the Brigham Young University campus.
The club’s lone championship came in 2004, when they swept Billings in the finals. That same year, the team is featured in the memoir Odd Man Out: A Year on the Mound with a Minor League Misfit, which details a player’s single season with the Angels. Following the 2004 season, new ownership moved the franchise to a new ballpark in nearby Orem, where it was renamed the Orem Owlz.
Background
The Provo Angels were born in 2001 as a Rookie League affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels, playing in the short-season Pioneer League. Their home was Larry H. Miller Field on the BYU campus in northeastern Provo. Over four seasons, the team reached the Pioneer League finals three times: losing to Billings in 2001 (2–0) and 2003 (2–0), and to Great Falls in 2002 (2–1). The breakthrough came in 2004, when the Angels swept Billings 2–0 to win their only championship in Provo.
That title was the first of five Pioneer League championships the franchise would eventually claim. The team's story is captured in Odd Man Out: A Year on the Mound with a Minor League Misfit, a memoir detailing a player's season with the Provo Angels. After the 2004 season, new ownership moved the team to Orem, where they were renamed the Orem Owlz.
